Jesse, Our Drahthaar
In the rolling fields and wooded hedgerows of southeast Michigan, our family’s pheasant hunting tradition found its heartbeat in Jesse—a Deutsch Drahthaar with a keen nose, a steady point, beautiful retrieves to the hand, and a loyal heart.
We got Jesse from a respected breeder in Nova Scotia. She was a “started dog” when we brought her home—her training was underway, but not complete. It didn’t take long for her to earn her place as one of the best hunting dogs we’ve ever had, and a solid member of our family. When we showed up to hunt, everyone knew Jesse. She wasn’t just our bird dog—she was our companion, our teammate, and part of our identity.
The Drahthaar Difference
The Deutsch Drahthaar is a versatile, wire-coated hunting dog developed for performance in field, forest, and water. Unlike flushers, Drahthaars are pointing retrievers. They work with quiet focus, holding solid points when they scent game, then flushing on command and retrieving with precision. That’s what Jesse did best.
She would lock up on a pheasant buried deep in cover—motionless, nose like a laser, muscles taut. We’d ease into position, give the word, and she’d break forward to flush the bird cleanly. After the shot, she’d retrieve to hand, calm and proud. It was poetry in motion— her instinct, training and loyalty distilled into a single moment.
Michigan’s Tough Terrain
Our hunts in Michigan weren’t over easy fields or manicured preserves. The places we hunted were challenging—overgrown thickets, CRP fields, tangled brush, and crop stubble. Jesse handled it all with drive and grace.
She knew how to work the wind. She adjusted her range on the fly. She found birds in places most hunters would’ve walked right past and many times had. For years, she helped us find pheasants in the small pockets of wild habitat still holding strong in southern Michigan. It was hard hunting, and that’s why we loved it.
Pelee Island: The Legacy Hunt
Every fall, for several years, Jesse joined us on a special family trip—our annual pheasant hunt on Pelee Island in Ontario, where three pheasant hunts are scheduled from October into November. My father-in-law, Big Tom, started that tradition decades ago, and it became a rite of passage for all of us. The ferry ride across Lake Erie, the early morning mist, the smell of wet leaves and dog hair—it was all part of the ritual.
Pelee Island is unique. Thousands of pheasants are released before each hunt, but the birds don’t wait around. They vanish into thick wooded cover, tangled hedges, and expansive bean fields within hours. It’s not a sure thing. It’s a real hunt. Jesse thrived there. Her skills were tested and sharpened every trip. She would pick apart a hedgerow like a surgeon, then swing wide into open bean fields with unshakable purpose.
She became a legend in her own right on that island. She retrieved a wounded pheasant that flew it's last flight a hundred yards over Lake Erie, diving into the rolling waves without hesitation, while keeping a precision gaze on the bird to be collected, she swam straight to it and retrieved it back to me, climbing the large boulders that lined and protected the shore from erosion. One of the more memorable retrieves and hunts of my lifetime. Other hunters would tip their hats or ask about her by name. She had a reputation—and she earned it.
More Than a Hunting Dog
Back home, Jesse was just as much a part of our family as anyone else. She lay by the fire, rode in the truck, and watched over the house. She wasn’t just a bird dog—she was a steady presence in our lives. When she passed, it left a silence we still feel.
But what remains are the memories. The frozen points. The long retrieves. The way she’d glance back before we gave the word. The tradition continues, of course, but her pawprints are still on the path.
The Tradition Lives On
Jesse’s story isn’t just about one dog—it’s about family, legacy, and the timeless connection between hunter and dog. It’s about waking up early with coffee and anticipation, walking behind a good dog in good cover, and knowing that some moments can’t be replaced.
We still hunt those Michigan fields. We still cross to Pelee Island each fall. And every time we do, we carry her with us—in our stories, our memories, and the way we move through the fields.
This is our hunting tradition. This is Jesse’s legacy.
